One of the Very Best Authors: Robert Cormier

Robert Cormier

“The Rag and Bone Shop” is among the books written by Robert Cormier. It is a fictional book written for 7th grade readers and was Mr. Cormier’s final book published after his death. Robert Cormier is famous for writing novels for young adults. Mr. Cormier’s work is controversial; however, because many believe the material is inappropriate for young readers. He began writing when he was only 12 years old. His first published work was a short story he wrote in college, which was submitted to a magazine by his teacher without his knowledge. Cormier then went on to work as a newspaper reporter and columnist for 30 years.

Cormier won many prizes, both for his journalistic work and for his young adult novels. One of the most prestigious awards he won was the Margaret A. Edwards Award, presented by the Young Adult Library Services Association, a division of the American Library Association in recognition of authors who provide young adults with a window through which they can view the world, and which help them to grow and understand themselves and their role in society. He received the Margaret A. Edwards Award for his novels The Chocolate War, I am the Cheese, and After the First Death.

Robert Cormier was born and raised in Leominster, Massachusetts. He lived in Massachusetts his whole life and died in the year 2000. Robert was married to his wife, Connie, and had four children. He enjoyed traveling and visited nearly every state in the U.S. In his spare time, he liked to read, something he recommended to all aspiring writers. Robert Cormier also enjoyed watching movies, listening to music and walking for exercise.

Robert Cormier wrote the following books:
• 8 + 1
• The Chocolate War
• Beyond the Chocolate War
• After the First Death
• Fade
• Frenchtown Summer
• Heroes
• I am the Cheese
• In the Middle of the Night
• Other Bells for Us to Ring
• Tenderness
• The Bumblebee Flies Anyway
• We All Fall Down
• Tunes for Bears to Dance To

Robert Cormier’s books are easy to read and seem to always have a twist waiting around each corner to surprise the reader and keep him/her interested. My favorite Cormier book is “We All Fall Down”. Among his books that were made into movies are The Chocolate War, Tenderness, and The Bumblebee Flies Anyway. I highly recommend his books to anyone who likes suspense, not just young adults.
